What is Juneteenth?

Juneteenth, also known as Juneteenth Independence Day or Freedom Day, commemorates the day that Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, on June 19, 1865, to announce the end of slavery in the United States. Although the Emancipation Proclamation was issued by President Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863, it took two and a half years for the news to reach Texas due to various reasons.
